Gmail cant get to contacts

Setup gmail, receiving messages
problem with sending
Imported contacts from a .cvs file into CONTACTS
opening contacts from the drop down menu in Gmail, shows populated with contacts.

Going to compose
New Message window opens up
Clicking on TO opens Select Contacts
Clicking on All Contacts does not get contacts from CONTACTS
It shows 3 contacts which were from test messages sent to Gmail from another computer
At this point it seems that Gmail cant get to the contacts file
I think I have tried all possibilities locally
Checked on web but nothing indicated corrected this problem

where am I missing the connection from Gmail to CONTACTS

By CONTACTS do you mean the Folder under C:\Users\Contacts? I'd think Gmail has an Import feature of its own for importing from the .csv file. Click on the Apps icon on the top right, a 'box' of 9 [3x3] squares. May have to wade through some of the menus to find it like the bars on the left.

Yes its the Users\Contacts file
this file was populated by import from a .cvs file containing contacts.The 3x3 icon
in Gmail opens a drop down with icons one of which is Contacts
clicking on that icon shows contacts,addresses etc
However when I try to compose a message in Gmail I cannot get an address
from this file as though Gmail cannot get to this file where the people/addresses live

I only have a Gmail account for a needed purpose some time back but I think you have to Import the addresses or Add them.
