SOLVED Can no longer access contacts directly from Gmail

referred to Google's Hangouts but it does not have many of them. Google Hangouts insists that I connect with a number before adding it to Hangouts my name. So I cannot even search by name.

Contacts is still there, just click the icon along the top right that looks like nine (9) small squares to expose a list of various applets.
It has been relocated to the bottom, so just use your mouse wheel to scroll down and then you can drag it back to the top where it is at least a bit more handy to get at.

Like so many computer software products, they come out with a new interface with some tweaks that are suppose to make things better, when all they do is confuse the heck out of people.
