While I have successfully installed this on a couple of PCs; I'm having this issue on two very different machines. I'm seeing these two errors in the Event Viewer:

System Log: "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80073715: 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4058258)."

Setup Log: Windows update "Update for Windows (KB4058258)" could not be installed because of error 2147956501 "The identities of the manifests are identical but their contents are different."

I have tried:
  • Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • Windows Update Component Reset
  • Installation via Windows Update
  • Installation via manual download
  • dism /Online /add-package /packagepath:"E:\Windows 10 Updates\KB4058258.cab"

no problems so far... Installed on both my laptops without issues.
Sometimes I get error codes as well, especially when WD wants to update the same time. Usually before I check for updates I get Windows Defender supplied with the latest definitions and then start Windows update. Never any problems so far...

Anybody know what the new Servicing Stack will effect?

@ICEM4m, you may want to go through a System File Check and then the DISM sequence to correct your situation.

No idea, wasn't even aware of it until you mentioned it.
I did locate this https://www.computerworld.com/artic...-win10-1709-cumulative-update-kb-4058258.html
Which has some basic information.

I remember when they released the last servicing stack update for Windows 7. It was a prerequisite for the Windows 7 Rollup packages that followed.

I received it on January 31st according to this

I should not ethat I ran SFC and DISM health checks. That got me thinking that the only common thread on these 3 machines is that at one point or another, I've run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Trouble, my update does not show as a separate update. The only reason I know is I saw it mentioned in the CBS log.

I agree it is important and I do remember having to go back and get one of them after a clean install to a later build. Maybe it will be involved in repairing some current problems.

I also assume Intel has not issued a fix for the previous patch. Dell has not yet replaced the earlier Bios updates which were pulled.

Mine does not show as a separate update.
Mine either. At least not in the normal updates window.
I had to go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates (left column)
I found it there.

IceM4n, you might have something since I saw the warning below listed after that command explanation. Perhaps something prior was removed which the update needed.

WARNING! The installed Windows Updates cannot be uninstalled after the
/StartComponentCleanup with /ResetBase operation is completed.

If you wanted to check, you might look through the CBS log, which can be very large. But one of the current or archived logs may have the error you show and you could search for that.

"Not showing as a separate update" That's strange! mine showed up immediately in the normal update Window. I always check to ensure that updates are successful.

Saltgrass Sorry for the confusion the thread went off track from the OP KB4058258 OS Build 16299.214 to KB4074608

I was referring to the OP KB4058258 showing in the installed updates. Sorry guys for the confusion.

With the failures to install this update, Microsoft are pointing a finger at third party antivirus programs, isolating essential items needed for the update.
IMO, the problem could also be caused by indiscriminate use of third party "cleaners", or, as an outside chance, alterations to the registry.

Dave Which update are you referring to. KB4058258 or KB4074608. I haven't seen anything of KB4074608. KB4058258 downloaded through the regular MS updates. I've read that KB4074608 is an update for the stability of the soon to be released RS-4 1803. Coming our way in March.
