Small start window to the top of main screen

How to get rid of the small START window at the top left hand side of the main window
Its using up screen real estate that I could better use

If you mean the Windows start icon? Try changing the taskbar to the bottom of the screen.

It is not the task bar
it is a small start window which occupies the space across the top of the screen
it takes ujp a whole swatch of the screen real estate
something like a banner would occupy the top of the screen
I need to get rid of this item and recover the screen space

Or toggle off tablet mode or Use Start full screen (Off).
Best to hold the Windows logo key on your keyboard and strike the print screen key and then go to Pictures -> Screenshots and attach it to your next post so we can have a better idea of what you are seeing.

I need to reclaim all that grey area banner like space at the top of the main screen

At the very top of the Edge browser next to the last tab you should see a little down arrow. Click that to turn off tab previews
