Tools/compatibiliy view

Not very computer savvy (obviously). Need to change compatibility view to do an online course for work. I don't have the tools bar on my explorer and I've been searching for a while now and all I can find is "alt" or "f12" to get it back but neither work. What am I doing wrong?

With IE click on the Alt key, this will open the tools menu. Click on compatibility view settings and choose your view setting.
