Win 10 on AsusPro Stuck on Automatic Repair

All was going well for months - was watching a DVD and shut the lid with it still on and since then laptop won't start into Windows. Have tried reinstalling, keeping files and then new installation but it continues to loop Automatic Repair no matter which option I try. Sometimes it allows me to log in but as soon as I have done that it goes back to "Preparing automatic Repair". Often with a white screen, sometimes offering options but all result in no entry to Windows. This was a Windows 7 upgrade which went very smoothly until the DVD episode. The DVD is not still in machine. The laptop is a few years old but not used very often.
