Brochure printing with photos

I have written a book using Libreoffice and OpenOffice, printing 32page signatures. I am now trying to make a 32page signature consisting of photographs with captions, This works perfectly well originally, but images disappear or move position, even if anchored. If I stop work and save, when I boot up again nearly everything is spoilt. Should I be using a different (desk top publishing?) program?
