Can't get to desktop

I just turned my laptop on and I can't get to my desktop, it just opens me on my app screen and even when I click the button on the bottom left that normally would allow me to switch between the two it does nothing. Can someone please tell me what I've done, and how to fix it.

Click the notification Icon on the bottom right near the clock and then click tablet mode.
See if that toggles on and off the screen that you are talking about.
