I have the above windows update hanging at 49% download for the last couple of days on my laptop. does anyone please have any idea why this should be?

You have a couple of options here:

Option 1

Given the update is hanging then running the Windows 10 Update Troubleshooter tool may resolve this for you:

You can get that here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-update-troubleshooter

Option 2

KB2267602 is an update intended for Windows Defender. If you are using Windows Defender, you can open that and use the Update tab there to update your program.

Thank you so much for your advice it was very useful, it appears I had a connectivity issue which is now resolved.
