today saw that I have a device associated with my account I no longer own. Do I need to remove and if I do what will that effect my account? What issues will this cause?

The devices showing are all the devices that have verified connections. If you remove one, it only means that device will need to be verified again. There is no harm in removing all of them. It only means that afterward, all the devices will need to be verified. Verification is usually done by alternate email address or phone number.
