Just for the heck of it, I tried installing Classic8 and it works.

I wonder if Start8 which I have bought for Win 8.1 will be supported by Win 10 TP 9926 too.

I had start8 when using W8, then found classic shell (free and more options than start8) and used it in 8.1. Now have installed win 10 build 9926 in a separate partition and classic shell works just fine. I am a fanatic about keeping my desktop and taskbar clean, and would like to find out how to remove "Search the web and Windows" from the taskbar

This new Cortana feature or link or shortcut takes up about 1/4 of my taskbar . Too bad we cannot reduce it's size

Start8 also works in 9926.
BUT, it messes up the built-in icons that are in the taskbar. Those icons ended up hidden behind Cortana box. Don't know why. I had to uninstall it.

I have chosen not to use Cortana, so, only speaking from a position without it - Sandman's suggestion does get rid of it, or, you can choose to have an icon only

By the way. I found Classic shell could not be opened in 9926, but, those people always keeping up with things, they have now launched Classic shell Beta. Beta it is but, as far as I have found (I am using it) it has no bugs. Superb alternative.
