Hello,

I use my cell phone to connect my Dell laptop to the Internet, using a USB cable. I have Windows 10 on my laptop. Up until recently this worked perfectly with no problems. But now I keep getting this error message that says my USB device is not recognized. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Thank you

Have you tried restarting your laptop and then make the connection. When disconnecting the phone how are you doing that? Are you using the "safe to remove" method or just unplugging it.....which is wrong.

I have restarted both the laptop and my phone. I am not aware of the "Safe to remove method", how do you do that?

Try unplugging ALL of the power to the computer, including the battery. Leave it for rive minutes and then reconnect and try again. This can sometimes *reboot* the hardware.

The damage to the computer is overrated, but can happen. More likely, is damage to the data on the usb plug

Take this with a pinch of salt!!

I have, almost since USBs were invented, taken no precautions when plugging/unplugging USB connections. To date, I hve never experienced a problem on my computers or on others. I cannot ignore the frequent advice one can read, so, take care.
Having said that, with my luck, I'll probably have a USB disaster in the next few days!

Because of all of the great information that I have gotten from this post, I no longer get the above error message.

When I attach my Nokia 3.1 phone to my Dell laptop via USB cable, I get a message that the connection has been assigned drive letter E:.

But if my computer is idle for about 2 minutes, the connection dies.

When I click on This Pc, Drive E: and my phone show up separately.

Should I go back to Disk Management and assign Drive letter E: to CDROM 1?
I checked for drive updates.

Thank you

Dear Cinque,
Before plugging in your phone, assign a letter between L to Z. Do this for CD ROM's letter.
