windows 10 says that printer has been installed successfully but when I do print test page, nothing prints and the print queue is empty.

I first installed it locally via the parallel port with the results described above.
I then re installed it using the usb port same result.

(this printer works on a xp platform)

On the parallel port I used lpt1.
On the usb port I used whatever usb assigned to it.
I tried the specific driver assigned to the printer and also the Universal hp driver for windows10.

I get no error messages win10 says that everything is ok with printer.
The usb for this printer in not PNP but win10 recognizes it and assigns a port. This just shows up as a device on the "devices" screen.
If any one has clues please let me know.
Thanks

I would suggest that you start off by first clicking on the Window Icon in the lower left corner and then clicking the icon that looks like a gear on the left side of the menu to bring up SETTINGS. From within Settings click on Devices to bring up the devices settings. First, check to see of your LaserJet 1300 is in the list of installed printer. If it is, you will see a on/off switch for a setting called "Let Windows Manage My Default Printer" On my PC the switch is turned off. Next scroll down a bit on that same page and under Related Settings click on the blue link for Devices and Printers. On this page you will see the various devices that are installed and if your printer is installed there will be an Icon for it as well. At this point your printer should have a green circle with a check mark to indicate that this device is the default device for this PC. If the device with a check box is not your printer then right click on the printer and make that device the default. Hope this helps.

Sorry. Thanks for the reply. But that did not work.
I added a printer and it showed up on the devices page as the proper printer.
Clicked on its icon. Then in the place where it says something like "see what is printing" I clicked that. Then clicked on 'printer' then preferences then
print test page. It shows a message that test page was sent to printer.
However, nothing gets printed, and the print queue is EMPTY.
Where did the printout go?????
(behaves the same way even if printer is powered OFF)
On printers that work if you do the above, test page remains in queue and you might get a message from win10.
By the way there is a shortcut that can be made to access devices, When on devices page, just drag a device to desktop and you will get a shortcut to it.
I would like more suggestions to solve this problem.

The strange part is that it was working on win10 about 2 months ago and I could access it from another win10 computer ant thirdly I could access it from an XP computer. Then it quit. About that time secured file sharing also quit which I got re-enabled. I do not know if there is a connection. Win10 seems to be getting updated automatically I do not know if that is a connection.
I know that this printer works as at this time i connect it to an xp computer to get printouts.

Here's a few links that may help you out......

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/Printer-prints-test-page-but-nothing-else/td-p/5209048.

The important thing about this page is that they reference a tool that you can find here:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02073861?jumpid=ex_r4155/hho/ipg/ccdoc/trailhead_doc

Here's another article I found.

http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-to-fix-printer-problems-in-windows-10-11363996318374

I would start with the free tool from HP and see where that takes you.

I am going through the list of your suggestions. No success yet but here is an interesting thing I discoverd,
I attached the usb cable to another win10 computer
and BINGO it installed . I did not even have to go to the 'add printer' page.

It works on the computer with build 1607 but not the one with 1511 build.

Do not know if there is a connection.

Could not update the 1511 build, but that is a different topic which I just posted.

Thank you for the help so far.

As I understand things with USB devices is that once the system thinks the device is installed, even if it is improperly installed, it cannot fix itself without removing the device or removing the device driver for it. I found this video that offers several suggestions on how to resolve this issue and you can view it here
. If that doesn't work I would suggest calling HP and paying for a support call to have them assist you in resolving this issue because if you can plug the printer into a USB port on another Windows 10 PC it's obviously not a problem with the printer but I'm guessing that it's not a problem with Windows 10 itself but a problem with how the device is installed. Hope this video helps.

I solved the problem by re-installing windows10 and all the updates.

The usb printer installed itself (without my asking!)
The wireless printer installed itself by me clicking on its picture.
Now when i do an "add a printer" the system find the printers.

The re-installation also fixed another problem. Win10 was refusing to do updates. ok now
Thanks for the support.
