After waiting from July 29,2015, until October and I hadn't been upgraded to my reserved win 10 home, I decided to run the upgrade file, "wuauclt.exe" which failed with an error, 80240020. I researched the error but I'm not sure what to do about it. I have been receiving updates, according to the "windowsupdatelog", any suggestions as to my next move, or does it appear that the upgrade might complete? Did I make a mistake by running "wuauclt.exe"?

It shouldn't.
All it is supposed to do is to check with Microsoft websites for updates.
There is something "fishy" why you don't get to upgrade through Windows Update.

Why don't you try using the other method........
Download Media Creation Download Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10
Pick the correct bit version for download.
Run the Tool.......
you can either select Upgrade this PC now which will begin installing, or
you can select Create installation media for another PC which will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer.
With the ISO file in hand, you can either.............
burn it to a bootable media such as DVD or USB and use it to install, or
right click at the ISO file > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
Installation will begin.
It will allow you to keep files, settings and apps or keep nothing. Your choice.
It does not ask for product key. If and only if it does, select the SKIP option and continue.
Activation is supposed to be automatic.

You are welcome and good luck.
I tried to upgrade win 8.1 to win10 using the bootible dvd I burned with windows.iso file. Setup stopped with error that I needed a driver, but failed to say which driver. I was told to remove boot disc and reboot to windows and continue the upgrade. Not sure if I'm to open the upgrade folder and run setup.exe. Could that be what I'm to do? Don't want to make things worst.

That is why you didn't get to install Win 10 from Windows Update.
I am sorry. I do not know how to help you installing the required driver.
Please kindly wait a bit for others to come along.
Thank you.

You do not upgrade Windows to Windows 10 by booting from the Windows 10 bootable disk.
You boot into your qualified previous version of Windows and then open the DVD and run setup.exe from there.
Setup stopped with error that I needed a driver
Cause
This issue occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • The installation DVD is removed during the setup process.
  • A low-quality DVD was used to create the installation DVD.
  • The speed at which the installation DVD was burned was too fast.
  • The DVD drive cannot read the media.
  • The ISO file is corrupted.

It's an old article but still applies
