Strange desktop noise

Just tried to shut down my desktop and just kept showing the spinning circle on a blue screen, so in the end I switched it off at the mains. When I booted it back up, there was a black screen with DEL bios etc and f12 and a continuous beeping sound. It's back up and running again now, but I can't but wonder what what was happening?.

Probably some hardware failure. I had similar issues where my computer (desktop) would beep during post. i think it had a short but there was no record of it in the log. it happened several times though i had the hard drive out multiple times before then and i can only assume it was a short.
