After logging on I get a popup message saying, "Failed to connect to a windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client service. This problem prevents standard users from signing in"

How do I rectify this problem

Thanks

Hello emily8 and welcome to the forum.
How do I rectify this problem
Not sure....
The message would seem to indicate two things
1. The Group Policy Client service
Right click the Start Button and choose Run and in the Run dialog box type
services.msc
hit enter or click ok
scroll to "Group Policy Client"
Double click it and confirm that the "Startup Type" says Automatic (it may have "Trigger Start" appended).

2. Standard users
That indicates users of the computer who are not members of the local administrator's group.
Is your account, a standard or administrator account?
Do you have other local accounts which are not administrator group members.

A couple things you might try.....
Right click the Start Button and choose Command Prompt (Admin) and in the command prompt window type
sfc /scannow
hit enter
let it run
see what if anything it comes up with.

If it reports no integrity violations then try clean booting the system using the Windows 8 instructions here
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
If that provides relief from the message / error then, you will need to take your time re-enabling non-Microsoft Services and then Start Up items, one at a time or in very small groups, rebooting after each change to determine the offending programs or process.

Failing the above you might want to try creating a new user account (as a member of the local administrator's group, not a standard user) and log on with the new account and see if the problem persists.

Thank you, will try these options.
