Won't let me set up Thunderbird.

After installing 10 I find I am unable to use Thunderbird to log into my Bigpond.com account. I can do so easily using the outlook webmail page. Using same name and password, and checking that the ports and encryption is correct. I also have the same problem with Mailbird. I can also log in OK using the email client on my phone. Is MS deliberately forcing people to their client?

I don't think so.
Are you currently running any third party security suites (Avast, Avira, AVG, Comodo, McAfee, Norton, Zone Alarm, etc.,)?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird?
