Cannot downloaded pictures in emails

I have recently received severa emails with attachments that have failed to download. The attachment icon is in place but at the bottom the notice 'download filed' appears. Does anyone have a helpful suggestion?

Don't know if it applies but frequently an image in a message will not appear if the original source of the file is no longer available at the time of trying to download/save it. It can happen if that source is not the drive on the computer, if the file has not actually been saved before sending or forwarding. Sometimes the icon will have a broken line through it or just be a generic blank image.
