SOLVED Can't connect to pop.verizon.net

Using MS Outlook under Windows 10; email is on AOL/Verizon. Worked successfully for months, then on 4/29/18 got a message "Your system is infected with a virus". Norton AV did not indicate a problem, so dismissed this as fake ransomware. Email worked OK until I logged off, now won't load and I sporadically get a pop-up asking for user ID and PW for pop.verizon.net. Entering that information gets no error message but can't connect to the server. Thanks for any ideas on how to fix this.

Apparently the threat was real enough that MS quarantined my account. Today, Windows walked me through removing the threat, so at this time it looks like a happy ending; all function is restored.
