Can't save to folder

Getting error "This location on disk E: is full. Choose another location and try again. There's plenty of room on the disk; how can I increase the capacity of the folder?

What is "disk E:"
Is it a fixed internal disk
OR
Is it an external drive??
Is it possible that the drive or the folder is write protected in some fashion?
Can you create a new folder on the same drive and then save the file to that new location?

Disk E is an external drive and isn't write protected. I was able to create a new folder and save to it.

What is the format of that particular disk.
Although pretty generous there are some limitations to the maximum number of files in a folder based on the disk format
