Need help on how to change administrator settings. When we first set up windows 10 my wife became the administrator. I would like it changed to myself.

Hi rnicols,

In this modern politically correct world you could probably pop down to a low court and get your names legally swapped; problem solved

But seriously now:
  • Press Winkey + R to open Run dialog
  • Type or Copy & Paste the following into the Run Dialog:
control.exe nusrmgr.cpl
  • Click OK to execute command
  • Click the Manage another account link in the main window
  • Click on the account you want to make Administrator
  • Click Change the account type
  • Check the radio button next to Administrator
  • Click the Change Account Type button
  • Now click the Manage another account link again
  • This time click your wife's account
  • Click Change the account type
  • Check the radio button next to Standard
  • Click the Change Account Type button
Regards,

Oops trouble is correct and I forgot to mention: Do this from your wife's account as she is currently the administrator.

Right click the start button and choose Control Panel
IN the top right corner, change the drop down arrow from Category to Small Icons
Select User Accounts
Select the link that says Manage another account
Select your account
Select the link that says Change the account type
Select the radio button that says Administrator

You'll need to do this with a currently active Admin Account. A standard user cannot change his own account to administrator.

Sorry Reg..... the forum software is a bit wonky right now.
Ian is working diligently in the background to resolve it.
I didn't see your post before posting what amounts to, the identical solution.

No worries trouble.

Your solution may be more familiar for them anyway - I get a little carried away with the command in the Run dialog at times. Most users are more comfortable with Clicking Start | etcetera ...

Beside, I had forgotten to mention to run it from the current Administrator account, so your post gave me a chance to edit my own post and correct that omission.

I also omitted the information regarding his wife's account, as I didn't want him doing that one first (out of order) and ending up with no Admin account to complete the task, although his access token probably would have been good until a log-off and log-on.

Ahh yes well that was a wise move.

I made sure my instructions had him editing the wife's account last. So as long as he follows that or your one, then he ought to be fine.
