Top right corner of Internet Explorer -> Gear Icon -> Click it and select -> Internet Options
On the General Tab, click the Tabs button and check the top line that says "Warn me when closing multiple tabs"

Thanks, but all that does is tell me to do what I don't want--to close all tabs--when I want to close only the current one. Closing every tab means I have to start all over again in booting up previous sites, usually my emails on Cox Enhanced Mail. Do you know how to close only the current tab and not lose my current site? Again, thanks.

Each tab that is open, will have its' own "X" control.
IF it is not the active tab, you will need to hover your mouse cursor over the tab to see it.
You should be able to click any tab's "X" to close that tab only.
IF it is the only remaining tab open, that will also close the browser.
