It may also be theme related?, did you install another theme along with its icons?.

No I have not, it seems if I change or delete the numbers under the photos then the box disappears.

I recommend that you do an upgrade to version 2009 which is the current version!. This may solve your problem?. See post #9 for more details!.

it seems like that the name of the file may have something to do with it:

the space between the year and the date may have something to do with it but I am currently guessing.

what kind of extension do these files have as you have not revealed that yet?

Following what Grizzly said, the "path" to the files sometimes can be too long if they are on a storage drive other than the one Windows is installed on. Also involved is the program the files are associated with and should show the icon for that program, default is the Photos app in Start.
