Hibernation mode

I read the article on 'how to disable hibernation' and wondered why this was necessary? Isn't hibernation a mode that you have to choose before it starts working? Or is it something built into the OS that works automatically unless you disable it? It used to be an option under power settings. If you don't want it, don't select it. Can someone explain what I'm missing here? Thanks.
