I have recently uograded to windows 10 on a Surface as well as attached a Samsung screen.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Perhaps when you plug in the screen (monitor) it has built in speakers, or...... Windows thinks it does because of the HDMI connection.
With it attached, right click the speaker Icon down by the clock, bottom right of the screen select "Playback devices" and see what is selected as default (green check).
