I'm using Windows 10, and on my old PC, switching between headphones and speakers was seamless. I'd plug in the headphones to get sound through them, and when I removed them, the sound would come through the speakers.
However, my new PC behaves differently. I found a solution some time ago, but now I can't get the sound to switch to my speakers. I searched for solutions, but they were complicated. Here's what I remember:
Right-click on the speaker icon in the status bar.
Right-click on 'Sound'.
Sometimes, this opens the "playback" screen directly; other times, I have to select the 'playback' tab.
From the playback window, you can see which device is set to 'on'. If the speakers aren't enabled, enable them. This should work, but I had to disable the headphones too. Once, the headphones showed a green telephone symbol. In that case, disabling the speakers didn't help, but enabling them afterwards worked.
