When trying to open a .DOCX file in Word 2010 I receive the following error message:

“there was an error opening the file.”

What can be causing this to happen?

Every .DOCX file or just one particular one? Try renaming the file to .DOC and see if it opens correctly.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Assuming that the file is not actually corrupt then sometimes it has to do with a permission issue.
Right click the .docx file and choose properties.
From the top select the "Security" tab
Examine the area labeled "Group or user names:"
IF your account name is not present, then....
Use the "Advanced" button to add it and explicitly grant your account full control of the file.

Try to resolve this issue, follow the steps below:

1. Close any applications that are running.

2. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start , click All Programs , click Accessories , right-clickCommand Prompt, and then click Run as administrator . If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow .

3. Type the following:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\ole32.dll and then click OK.

4. When you receive the message "DllRegisterServer in ole32.dll succeeded.", click OK:
