Permanent black screen after Windows update

I have a Lenovo 100s laptop which I use regularly on a daily basis mainly for browsing. It is a low spec machine (2gb/32gb). On powering off recently a Windows update started automatically. Progress was slow and when I returned to the machine after a few hours the screen was black. I left it overnight. However the screen was still black and pressing the power button had no effect, nor pressing it with any key combinations for fast boot. Nor does it recognise a USB stick and the Lenovo “Novo” button does not work. In fact it appears completely dead. Can anything be done? Can a Windows update cause this?

Hi Cressington,

did you have a USB stick plugged in when powering down?. If you did, have you removed it in the meantime?. Have you done any overclocking?. If so, enter BIOS (UEFI) and reset to defaults!.

See also (copy of Win 10 on a USB stick required!). :)
