On home pc I use smtp, but wondering if I use IMAP on smart devices for checking mail during the day away from home. Since IMAP doesn't remove from server then once home so I can reply as needed since smtp will then remove/delete them? Will this work?

Just for clarification: IMAP is an incoming protocol, meaning for receiving emails. SMTP is for outgoing emails not incoming.
There are only two standards for incoming emails: IMAP and POP3.
IMAP syncs the email accounts on every device that has access to it whereas POP3 downloads emails from the server and stores it locally.
