Im helping my mother with her new Dell Windows 10 computer.
It seems like it goes to sleep and then will not wake up. We have to shut it down and then turn it back on.

new Dell Windows 10 computer.
My first advice on something like this is always to take it back to the place of purchase and make them fix it, or exchange it, or give you your money back.
It should absolutely work, properly, out of the box and it should not be your responsibility to figure it out.
It seems like it goes to sleep and then will not wake up.
You may want to read any documentation (user's manual) regarding any specifics as to recovering from an energy saving mode (hibernate or sleep or hybrid sleep) to save any potential embarrassment but other than that, it is not up to you to make a new computer work.
On occasion recovering from sleep or hybrid sleep, when the computer does not respond to mouse / trackpad nor keyboard strikes of the spacebar or enter key, it might require depressing the power button once or twice, slightly longer than a tap, but slightly less than would evoke a hard shutdown.
