Cannot install windows 10 on my windows 7 (64bit) computer and cannot find a simple remedy. Should I wait for Microsoft to sort it or can I trust Wiki-errors software to sort it out?

My first suggestion is and will always be....
Create a disk image of your Hard Disk before proceeding any further.
https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/please-for-your-own-peace-of-mind.794/

Then if you have any third party security suites installed, uninstall them completely (you cannot truly disable them, so don't bother) use the Programs and Features applet in the Control Panel to Uninstall them and then google for their vendor specific, proprietary removal tool and use that also (AVG Removal Tool, Norton Removal Tool, McAfee Removal Tool.... you get the idea).
Next.... minimalize your hardware by disconnecting any and all peripheral devices. Especially any USB Dongles supporting wireless devices like wireless keyboards, wireless mice, wireless network adapters, etc.

Perform the in-place upgrade from a local resource (forget about the on-line upgrade.
Get the installation media in hand.
The installation media can be obtained through either of these two resources.

OR

Once you have the ISO, you can use ImgBurn to burn it to a DVD or Rufus to burn it to a USB ThumbDrive, either of which you can use to perform the in-place upgrade by simply double clicking the setup.exe program on the media from within your running OS.

Everything trouble mentions is a good idea. The more streamlined your system is, the better chance the upgrade will succeed.

But for now, can you be more specific about where the install breaks down? Does it finish the download, does it stop at one particular percentage and is that percentage the section percentage or the overall percentage.

The install needs extra room to create archive folders as well as the install files. You need extra room on the drive for that to happen.

There may also be a file named setupact.log which could be in a Panther folder. If you can find the one being written to during the upgrade attempt, it may contain information which could help. Sorry I don't know what the error means.
