I hit the sleep button instead of shut down and now my computer will not come back on. I have unplugged it and held down the on button repeatedly and nothing will happen. What do I do?

Unplug it from the wall / power strip and or battery backup if in use.
While it is unplugged, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
Plug it back into the wall and power it on.
Failing that.....
Try another wall outlet, another power strip or battery backup if either are in use.

Do you see any lights (front or back flashing or steady) of machine indicating a power source is available?
When you press the power button
Do you see anything on the screen (BIOS / POST information) anything in text or an icon symbol or image of any type?
Do you hear any noise that might indicate any drive (hard disk or optical drive) being accessed or powered up?
Do you hear any beeping coming from the case?
IF not .....
I would suspect a power supply failure.
I can't imagine how simply striking the sleep key on your keyboard would have produced this type of behavior.
