10586.71 Could not Rename folders
In searching Windows 10 News I found an update not posted to Windows Update:
10586.79 Still could not Rename folders
Contacted Microsoft Support:
She had me do a System Restore to 10586.63
Was able to rename folders!!!
Windows Update updated to 10586.71 Again I could not Rename folders
I do not see any new posts about this problem.
In addition I am having this issue on two (2) other computers.
On one I did a System Restore to 10586.63 and Renaming is now working.
How can I hold the update to 10856.71 until this is fixed?
Thanks in advance!

Hi what folders are you trying to rename
The only thing I rename is in System Specs.
That is once I have updated it to the latest one

Until this issue is fixed (MS or forum) the quickest way to rename a folder:
On the parent folder, click the "File" tab, click "Open command prompt", use the "Ren" command to rename file.
Enclose name(s) in quotes if name(s) have any spaces.
Does anyone form Microsoft monitor this forum?

Windows Update to 10586.104 did not fix the folder renaming function or any process relying on the folder renaming function.

I'm not sure what your problem is.
Is rename not available in the right click context menu?
OR
If you click it... nothing happens?
OR
Do you get an error?
OR
Does it have nothing to do with the right click context menu and you cannot rename any file anywhere any how?

I get the same errors that you posted above - thanks for this workaround, Lee. And here's hoping MS fixes this issue. It began after an automatic update about two weeks ago.

After several calls to Windows Answer Desk the issue was escalated to a Level 2 Technician (Paul). On my laptop he had me do a restore to my 1/29/2016 restore point. Folder Rename worked correctly. He then disabled the current accumulated Windows Update. He said that newer updates will update as released.
On my Tower computer I had previously restored to 1/29/2016 restore point, Windows Update updated to 10586.104 and now that restore point does not appear in the list. The oldest restore point did not get "below" the issue. He then went to my Laptop and exported:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderDescriptions],
copied the exported file to my Tower PC, and then clicked on the exported .reg file. Some of the keys could not be imported, however, the ones needed to correct the renaming issue were imported. Folder renaming is working. He said to keep the .reg file. If future Windows Update do not fix the Folder renaming issue I can use this .reg file to [mask the problem] resolve the issue.
