My PC keeps randomly crashing but my mouse is still functioning properly. For some reason it never happens while I'm on a game but all other times, even on the standby screen, it's guaranteed to crash after a few minutes. This has only happened in the last 6 days and some people have suggested it may be a Microsoft issue they have also been aware of. My knowledge is limited! Any advice welcome. I have done all the obvious checks. Many thanks.

You might want to try clean booting your system as described here
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Easily done, easily undone.
Basically you're just disabling all the Startup Items and All non-Microsoft services.
Be sure to check the box to hide Microsoft Services, as you don't want to accidentally disable any of those.

Also try the system in Safe Mode
Hold the Shift Key on your keyboard, while clicking restart.
Use that to navigate through the Troubleshooting -> Advanced Troubleshooting -> Startup settings
And test with
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
You'll likely get an error or two regarding some Universal Apps, that don't like safe mode. Don't worry about them, just see if the computer behaves any differently in Safe boot as opposed to Normal boot.

I don't think there has been a Windows update recently if you are running the latest build. could you have gotten an update for something else?

If you are getting full BSODs you should have a dump file (.dmp) on your system. if so, you could zip it and put it on OneDrive and give us a link or if you have your system set up to do small dump files you could just attach it here.

Check the tutorials to see if one explains how to set up minidump files but it involves using the system properties to change to the smaller 256 K files. Right click the Start button and select System then Advanced system properties.
