Creating a document capable of allowing headings to be sorted.

I am working on what will be a long document maybe 1,500 pages and I would like to be able to alphabetically sort the paragraph headings.
Firstly I discovered that it is not possible to use a Table format with the first column reserved for alphabetical headings. Then I started to build a document by creating a number of paragraphs with a heading on the first line which I then activated Styles and Heading One which created a heading in the Navigation column but was difficult to sort alphabetically. I use Windows 10 and Word 2010.
