I've been attempting to get rid of the sign in screen with no success. I've entered "netplwiz" where required, unchecked the "user must enter password" box. I don't get any prompts to follow in another window, my only option is to click "OK" which I've done but the sign in screen still shows up when I reboot. I've tried to remove my name in the Users box with no success, I've tried using the "Users" tab as well as the "Run" tab - what am I doing wrong?

Hi potcrafter,

Welcome to the Forum.

When you open the netplwiz you initially see a window displaying users.

You need to:
  1. Select user you wish to stop sign in for
  2. Remove check for signing in
  3. Click OK

  1. After clicking OK you ought to next see the following:

    Untitled2.png

    In this window
enter your password, then re-enter to confirm then click OK

Next time you reboot you now ought to auto sign in.

Did you select, (if there was a choice) the correct user in the first window, before selecting OK?

That did it my friend. I think I unchecked the "user must enter" box first, and that must have prevented the automatic sign in box from appearing. Many thanks, and to Davehc as well!

Regedit32: Your post at #3

Just to be sure, does that mean if someone else wants to start my computer they will not be able to? In that case, how does the computer know that it is me who wants to start the computer without a PW?

As you have now registered the password with your user name, and dedicated the option not to need it for logging on, anyone with physical access (a family member for example) can switch on your computer and get straight to the desktop.

Yes. That was what I was concerned about, although for me the problem would be if the comp. was stolen and anyone could start it.

Hi Lynda,

Your Username is the name you log onto your Desktop(i.e. the name you chose for the account you log in to at startup).

If you linked this account to a Microsoft one then yes, you may see your username@email address you chose

I would not concern yourself too much with that. The password in the login, merely protects your computer/work, from prying eyes, such as in an office environment. Anyone with a basic knowledge of computers, could steal the computer and quite easily bypass the login to access the computer contents.
