Setting IE as default browser enables to choose browsers each time. is there another way to do this?

By setting Internet Explorer as the default browser, each time I click on a link, a window pops up asking me which browser I want to use which is very convenient I find. However when I set another browser as default, this does not happen. How can I keep the former feature when IE will not be available any more?
