Not certain I understand correctly.
You're trying to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 10?
I wasn't aware that there was an upgrade path from XP directly to Windows 10

That could be the problem. Windows 10 checked that the computer qualified but then after an hour gave me the message. Steve3661

Hmmmmm. The physical computer probably does qualify. but the update can't work as there is a no updateable OS there.

Stuff like that and people still wonder why one might move to Linux or buy a MAC! It made me think that what it (W10) should do is when it sees a non-upgradable OS is immediately ask if you have a valid W7/8 key and if so configure itself to do a full install or to stop right there.
