Windows Update won't run

After installing update KB3081436, I am no longer able to check for updates. I get the never ending update conga line dots trying to connect, which goes nowhere. There is no error code or anything. It just acts like it can't find the update site. I ran the Microsoft FixIt program, which ran and said it found and fixed some corrupt registry files, but nothing changed. I then did the manual fix using the elevated command prompt, without success. I really don't want to do a system reset or restore. Any solutions out there?
