Installing now.
Improvements and fixes
This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:

  • Addresses an issue affecting group policy expiration where an incorrect timing calculation may prematurely remove profiles on devices subject to the "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of day.”
  • Security updates to Windows Kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Scripting Engine, Internet Explorer, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Linux, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows MSXML, the Microsoft JET Database Engine, Windows Peripherals, Microsoft Edge, Windows Media Player, and Internet Explorer.

Well at least it looks like they figured it out.

Looks like the "other shoe" dropped. As it said, it only installed perceived faults from the previous update. In my case the whole thing took only about ten minutes, including the download.
As I read it, it seems the fault on so many users computers was the configuration of the option "Delete user profiles older than a specified number of day"

My machine which still has 1803 just got a new cumulative update, KB4462919. When that one completes, I will see if it continues to update to 1809..

Which is a bit amazing as I don't believe that, that particular setting is configured automatically, so.....
I'm wondering now if a lot of what we have and are seeing might have something to do with a domain linked computer
OR
IF there is some software utility out there that people are using that flips that particular switch.

Since the policy targets user profiles that have "not been accessed" in a specific number of days.....
IT seems to me that their vague reference to an "incorrect timing calculation" is probably the culprit as I would suspect that most people access their profiles daily, something might have been set to zero days

Got it, downloaded and rebooted...all appears to be ok, although I didn't experience any issues with the prior one.
I hope the don't fix what ain't broke rule doesn't apply in my case.

The "documents" issue may still occur since, in my experience this morning, the Version 1809 Build 17763.1 has to be installed first then Build 17763.55 can be installed. The plus I had was in downloading the full install using the MCT on Oct 3rd, had run it without the problem and the computers did the update to Build 17763.55 today so far without issue.

No problems on my older Dell with 1809.1 update or today's cumulative update KB4464330. (OS 17763.55)
