Why is Windows Media Player available when I upgraded another desktop pc with Win 7 and not with Win 8.1. How do I resolve this problem without it costing. Thanks

Windows Media Player is present, or should be present in all cases.
IF it is not go to
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features
In the left column click the link that says "Turn Windows features on or off"
Scroll as needed to "Media Features" and check the box.
That should include Windows Media Player, which you can then subsequently find in Start Menu -> All Apps -> Windows Accessories -> Windows Media Player.

I posted this thread on my second desktop with windows 7, and Windows Media Player was installed when I upgraded to Win 10, and it is working ok. I then went to my other desktop with Win 8.1 which is my post is referred to. I followed your instructions above and verified that Media Features box did have a check mark present, when going to the start menu, all apps, windows accessories, Windows Media Player was not present. Thanks for you help, although I am still in the dark on this.

You might try going back an unchecking it.
Click OK.
Reboot and then go back and check it and reboot again.
See if that makes any difference.

I thought we had a fix, as I tried you suggestion, and a window popped up saying "searching for required files" then it indicate it was installing windows update. Windows Media Player is now present when opening windows accessories. I placed a commercial dvd move in the drive, and would not auto start. I looked at the contents of the window media player to see if it needed configuring. It just not recognizing a dvd in the drive. A little progress is encouraging. Thanks
