I use Win+shift+S to open the new snipping tool.... it opens, I mouse over the text I want to snip... and NOTHING happens.... the past several weeks when I release the mouse button my snip appears in the lower right of the screen... Today nothing happens at all.

I should have mentioned that the entire screen remains greyed out, except the selection I "snipped" but then nothing further happens.
Plus I cannot paste the snip, it just pastes an old snip from hours ago.

When the screen appears dimmed I move the mouse to where I want to start and click then drag. I find the new program opens much quicker than Snippy.

I've not run into the issue you have described, but two things come to mind, that you might want to check.
  1. Via Device Manager, check your Display driver. Has it been updated lately? Rolling back may resolve issue, or alternately, updating it might resolve the issue.

Type device manager into Cortana search box and press enter key to access the Device Manager dialog.

  2. You may have some corrupted System files causing the issue.

Type cmd into the Cortana search box, then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys together. Click Yes when the UAC alerts you.

In the elevated command prompt that opens, type SFC /SCANNOW then press enter key to execute.

Note: It can help sometimes to execute this same command 2 - 3 times in a row to ensure any items discovered are in fact repaired.

Start button, settings cog, Apps, Apps & features, Snip & Sketch
Select, then Advance options, Reset
IF that doesn't work, try uninstall and then grab it from the Store again.

It is my default now. Have you set up the shortcut (prtscrn) key? Makes it even quicker and easier!

You might open Paint and paste just in case it is on the clipboard. When I did one, a notification on the lower right opened with the picture saying it was on the clipboard. If you did not get that notification, you may be able to turn it on is notifications.

Busy today. But after you've made the selection Snippy appears to do nothing until after Pasting where desired then closing Snippy gets a prompt as to save or not. Press the Windows key + V to see what is in the Clipboard if it has been turned on, will be another prompt if it has not been done.

Press the Windows key + V to see what is in the Clipboard if it has been turned on

If you open the Notifcation (bottom right corner) that snipped image appears there - letting you know its ready to paste.

Looking into the Registry to disable that annoying feature *lol* -- although you can choose to dismiss it from notifcation.

No idea of what is going on with the OPs posts, but I am having none of those problems. When I clip, the clip shows in the middle of the program's windows. Unless, of course, I am using the shortcut key. I then need to paste it somewhere to see it - that is by design, I would think.
But reading the post:
"I use Win+shift+S to open the new snipping tool.... it opens, I mouse over the text I want to snip... and NOTHING happens.... "
presumably, you are selecting which type of snip you need (rectangle etc--) ?

I still have Snippy on a couple of Notebooks and the new/default Snip and Sketch on others. Each has a feature to get used to, Snippy prompts for an action when being closed while S&S doesn't, just closes but leaves the snip in the new version of the Windows Clipboard.

I'm just getting acquainted with the new app, looking good so far. As far as that goes I'm just starting to come around to calling Programs as Apps. I do like not saving everything as most snips are "throw-away", one time use.

Yep, pretty much how I feel too.
I'm just starting to come around to calling Programs as Apps.
I'll probably never get there.
A full blown, robust, 32 bit program (application) is always going to be my tool of choice.
Not that there is anything wrong generally with "Apps", but....
By their very nature they were intended for low horse-powered mobile devices and as such are not going to have many extra whistles and bells.

I still patronize my local hardware store for one or two specific items, but....
For a "project" you'll usually find me at Lowes, Menards or Home Depot.

Exactly......so why is MS forcing this crap on us in the PC environment

That'd be because Microsoft are thinking post computer environment, i.e. the day when no one is using anything other than some form of portable device. Windows 10 for pc is basically your first bicycle with trainer wheels :D:p

Man..... I must have been hearing that for a decade or more now.

Personally I think the whole WaaS (Windows as a Service) thing is laughable.
I think people paying $1000 bucks for a so called "Flagship Phone" is hilarious.
Especially when they have their lobbyists in Congress trying to beat back a "Right to Repair" law, which if successful will prevent any servicing of these devices except by the manufacturer.

There's an old hillbilly axiom I'll paraphrase as "Dance with the person that brought you to the dance".

The day Microsoft forsakes Desktop users in hopes that Samsung, Google and a couple others will continue to let them run their software on their hardware will truly be a red letter day for Linux.

In the meantime, I'll keep my training wheels well lubricated and consider rotating them every decade or so.

I have to agree, with reservations, to regedit's comment. The reservation is that I really do not believe Microsoft are that foresighted, or imaginative.
Like you, Trouble, I have chilldren and grandchildren (now all in their late teens). Three of the children are actually in the IT business. They rarely sit down with their mainstream computers. All their social computer interests are done, mainly, on their mobiles. Only four out of 13 of our family, including myself, have desktops, although the remainder do have advanced laptops and Ipads.
