I have my grandsons laptop which when W10 started to get awkward in sep2015 he got fed up with and basically left it to gather dust in his bedroom. It is now retrieved. Basically the situation is that the start button won't work so 'settings 'is unavailable.. he has deleted Microsoft edge... but I have managed to get Internet explorer running and can access the internet. Obviously there have been no updates since sept. 2015to date...it seems that I am unable to force any updates to enable windows problems to be resolved which I dare say most of us have endured. Q1. AM I FLOGGING A DEAD HORSE. Q2 CAN ANYBVODY OFFER ANY GUIDANCE OR HELP.

My suggestion would be to obtain the latest ISO for installation. There was a huge update in November 2015 to build 10586 from build 10240.
Then perform and in-place upgrade repair. That is to say...... upgrade it again, overtop of itself from within your current install, just double click setup.exe in the installation media. Just be sure to check the little box to get updates as part of the upgrade process.
That will generally keep all your programs, data, drivers and such safe, but.....
I would still create a disk image before going forward. https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/please-for-your-own-peace-of-mind.794/

Installation media can be obtained here

Choose Windows 10 from the top of the first drop down list (not single language version at bottom).
Then your language and the bit version that is appropriate for your system matching your currently installed bit version.

If you already have the ISO you can simply mount it from within Windows 10 and run setup.exe from there.

Neosmart has a pretty good article on it here https://neosmart.net/wiki/windows-10-repair-installation/
You can skip the first couple paragraphs where they are promoting their recovery CDs and drill down to the meat of the article below.

Someone else may know of a good way to get it back but I have not seen a definitive answer for the problem.

There are quite a few posts suggesting fixes back in August or September of last year which might work in your situation. They seem to involve trying certain procedures and checking after each one to see if it helped. But all I can do is to point you toward one of these.

The Powershell commands seem to vary in different threads so I do not know if one is better than the other. And remember, you can copy and paste a command into the Powershell window. The one I am linking requires you be able to open a run box by using Winkey+R or right clicking the start button.

Luckily, I have not had your situation so no personal experience with the Powershell option.

I have had the same or similar problem; what caused mine was too many applications opening at power on.

Open the Task Manager( three fingered wave), and then click on the Processes tab. Look for memory hogs. Disable what you really do not need on startup, 'a check for whatever silly update'.

My system bogged at startup checking on some stupid update; I stopped several checks at power on and it solved my problem.

Hope this helps.
