Won't load desktop

I'm new here so please forgive if I blunder. Computer is stuck on loading/ (blue screen with spinning white dots). The dots are spinning, not frozen but that's All its doing. Been going on 25 minutes now. Any ideas? I had better mention that I'm not very tech savvy. Everything worked fine until a restart prompted by my antivirus to update antivirus program.
