Any particular browser? Both Chrome and Firefox will ask if you want them to set themselves as default and they do. Edge is already default. Don't know about Opera or Tor, nor IE.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs
Select Google Chrome in the left column
Click the Link near the bottom that says "Set this program as default"
Click OK

Should look something like this....
Only selecting Google Chrome on the left ...... not Word (desktop)

I did that, but it's stuck on "15 out of 19 defaults"

IF you use the other link "Choose defaults for this program"
Can you determine which are not being changed and what they are currently using as the Default program?

and when I try to set the web browser, it freezes a little, then does nothing

I have just set the Browser without going to that settings page. It has worked that way for me from the original build 10240 to now. I have always used Chrome 64 bit and always kept it uptodate.

So. You start up Chrome and it doesn't tell you that it is not the default browser and let you set it right there in Chrome?

Weird.

or startup Chrome, go to settings, down to the bottom of the page and see the default browser question there?

You do have to restart the browser after setting.

AND Cortana will use Edge no matter what you set.

FWIW I am using Version 55.0.2883.87 m (64-bit)

I have two conventional uptodate W10 machines....they have been W10 since the original 10240 build. I found long ago that W10 is really bad at using its setting system to set default browsers other than Edge...sometimes it will work sometimes it won't. I use Chrome 64 bit and using Chrome's own internal settings page to set itself as the default browser. This has never failed for me. After doing this and restarting Chrome then the Windows settings page will show Chrome as the default and one could then use that page to select Chrome or Edge.

IF changing your browser as suggested in the various posts above or manually setting the protocols (http, https, etc) either is not possible, does not work or doesn't hold the settings after changes are made then I would suspect that perhaps some third party security suite or other program is protecting your system and prohibiting such changes from actually working,.

the only thing is; ever since an update, I think its the anniversary one, this problem occurred. I haven't downloaded any security software.
